Poco Travels Even Further South

During the last week in April, 2004 Poco was observed in Boston  Harbor. If he chooses to remain in this incredibly busy harbor, the risks to Poco are immense. Project Director, Catherine Kinsman and Research Director, Toni Frohoff continue to be in contact with officials from the US National Marine Fisheries Service and others concerning the immediate development of monitoring and education programs. Catherine will be traveling to the Boston area to continue to research and contribute collaboratively to the efforts on behalf of Poco.

Poco surfaces in  Massachusetts!

Reports of a beluga sighted on the 5th and 6th of March just off Gloucester, Massachusetts raised our suspicions that this could be Poco, who was last seen in the Bay of Fundy about December 1, 2003. There had been one other report of a beluga sighting around Deer Island, NB on February 14, 2004. From photos taken in early March,  we were able to match several of Poco’s markings visible in our close-up images obtained while he was in the Bay of Fundy.
